October 2025 Scam: Local Scam Alert - Driveway Scam in Middle TN

The Better Business Bureau is warning homeowners in Middle Tennessee about a local scam targeting older adults.

How the Scam Works
Scammers visit unannounced, claiming they have leftover asphalt from a nearby project. They offer to pave or repair driveways at a low cost. Once work begins, the price can suddenly jump to thousands of dollars more than promised. Victims are often pressured to pay immediately using cash or credit cards.

Warning Signs

  • A stranger appears at your door with a “today-only” offer

  • The quote or contract is unclear or incomplete

  • The final bill is much higher than expected

  • You feel rushed or pressured to decide

How to Stay Safe

  • Do not agree to work with anyone who shows up uninvited

  • Get multiple quotes from reputable local contractors

  • Verify the company through the BBB or local authorities

  • Pay only after the work is complete and you are satisfied

If You Are Targeted
Take note of the company name, vehicle, and license plate, if you are able. Report suspicious activity to the BBB and local law enforcement.

A good rule of thumb with any home repairs: take your time, ask questions, and protect yourself before agreeing to any home improvement work.
