October 2025 Scam: Local Scam Alert - Driveway Scam in Middle TN
The Better Business Bureau is warning homeowners in Middle Tennessee about a local scam targeting older adults.
How the Scam Works
Scammers visit unannounced, claiming they have leftover asphalt from a nearby project. They offer to pave or repair driveways at a low cost. Once work begins, the price can suddenly jump to thousands of dollars more than promised. Victims are often pressured to pay immediately using cash or credit cards.
Warning Signs
A stranger appears at your door with a “today-only” offer
The quote or contract is unclear or incomplete
The final bill is much higher than expected
You feel rushed or pressured to decide
How to Stay Safe
Do not agree to work with anyone who shows up uninvited
Get multiple quotes from reputable local contractors
Verify the company through the BBB or local authorities
Pay only after the work is complete and you are satisfied
If You Are Targeted
Take note of the company name, vehicle, and license plate, if you are able. Report suspicious activity to the BBB and local law enforcement.
A good rule of thumb with any home repairs: take your time, ask questions, and protect yourself before agreeing to any home improvement work.
