January 2023 Scam: New Year Resolution-Stay Scam Smart!

For some, the New Year means making new resolutions. This year, let’s stay scam smart. The Better Business Bureau of Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky recently released a list of the top scams for 2023.

  • Weight loss scams

  • Employment scams

  • Phishing scams

  • Puppy sale scams

Scam Prevention Checklist:

  • NEVER allow anyone to pressure or threaten you into making a snap decision.

  • Be skeptical. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

  • DO NOT give out personal information (i.e., Social Security number, account numbers, personal identification numbers, or financial information) to anyone you don’t trust, online or over the phone.

  • DO NOT open emails or texts with links that you receive from unknown sources.  Double-check the source by calling the company or looking at the sender's address.

Always report suspected fraud to the BBB by filing a complaint using BBB.org/Scamtracker. Also, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at reportfraud.ftc.gov or call 877-FTC-Help.
