August 2025 Scam: Tag, You’re Tracked
Technology has brought us many conveniences, but it has also opened new doors for scammers. A recent trend involves Apple AirTags — small tracking devices that can be used to secretly follow people or vehicles without their knowledge.
What is an AirTag?
An Apple AirTag is a small, coin-sized device designed to help people track lost items like keys or bags using the "Find My" app on an iPhone. Unfortunately, scammers and criminals are using them for purposes that are more sinister — slipping them into purses, cars, or jackets to track someone’s movements. AirTag batteries can last up to a year—so if one is placed, it may remain active for an extended period, making prompt checks essential.
How the Scam Works:
A hidden AirTag is placed in or on your car, bag, or clothing without your knowledge.
The scammer uses it to follow you, often to learn your daily routine, home location, or find the right time to steal from you.
You may receive a phone notification saying an “unknown AirTag is moving with you.” Don't ignore it.
What You Should Do:
Take alerts seriously. If your phone warns you about an unknown AirTag, check your belongings and surroundings.
Use your phone to detect it.
For iPhone users:
If an AirTag not registered to your device moves with you, you’ll get an alert saying “AirTag Found Moving With You.”
Tapping this alert opens the Find My app, where you can use “Play Sound” or the map to help locate the device.
Once found, twist off the back of the AirTag, remove the battery, and contact the police
For Android users:
Download Apple’s free Tracker Detect app to scan for unknown AirTags
If one is detected, locate it, remove the battery to disable it, and inform the police.
3. Update your phone regularly. Apple updates include safety features that help detect unwanted tracking.
