Advocacy for Housing Affordability & Security

AgeWell is actively engaged in advocacy to support older homeowners aging in place and to create more affordable housing options. By leading the TN Coalition for Better Aging, and participating on the TN Supportive Housing Coalition and the AgeFriendly Nashville workgroup, we are committed to seeking additional public, private and philanthropic investments to boost housing security.

As a catalyst for innovative solutions and advocate for older adults, we have been studying models around the country and engaging with universities, nonprofits, government agencies, and faith communities to advance creative affordable housing solutions. We're pleased to report that after working with the Nashville Mayor's affordable housing team and other community advocates, the city has allocated $8M in federal rescue plan funding to create new affordable rental units for older adults, and to launch a home-sharing pilot program in 2024.

Intergenerational home sharing matches older homeowners who have a spare bedroom with graduate students (or other adults) who need affordable rent. Rent can be an important source of supplemental income for older homeowners, and shared living fosters intergenerational and often intercultural connections.

The long-term goal is to create a more age-friendly community that brings generations together to reduce isolation and improve economic security.
